When sending one or more documents out for signature, you can choose a method of authentication for the signer. If enabled, they must successfully complete authentication to access and sign the document(s).
Supported Authentication Methods
- First four numbers of SSN/EIN
- Last four digits of SSN/EIN
- Access code (email)
- Access code (SMS)
- Question and answer
The authentication method is chosen in the second step of the signature process flow. For more information on each method, refer to the table at the end of this article.
Authentication methods explained
Authentication Method | Description |

First 4 of SSN/EIN |
The user enters the first four digits of the signer's Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) The signer is required to enter the first four digits of their SSN or EIN. |
Last 4 of SSN/EIN |
The user enters the last four digits of the signer's Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) The signer is required to enter the last four digits of their SSN or EIN. |
Access code (email) | The signer is prompted to request a one-time access code that is delivered to their email address. The code is valid for 20 minutes. |
Access code (SMS) |
The user enters the signer's mobile number. The signer is prompted to request a one-time access code that is delivered to their mobile phone number. The code is valid for 20 minutes. |
Question & Answer |
The user selects a question and answer pair from a previously defined set or creates a custom pair. The signer is prompted to answer the question selected or created by the user. |
